Summary from Goodreads:
The land of Shandow is a place of arctic cold. It was the scene of the bloody revolution, and is the location of the item Cameo’s master wants so badly. In the dark of winter a vampire lies in wait……Opal is unable to run from his past… and Cameo must make a choice that will cost her the last shred of humanity she has left.
My Review:
Cameo and the Highwayman is the second book in this series about an otherworldly assassin and her flamboyant thieving friend. I enjoyed book 1, although it took me a bit to become acclimated with the setting and understand the characters. Book 2 picks up right where book one left off. Cameo, Black Opal and Kyrian are on a boat to Shandow to collect the bones Cameo’s master wants so badly. Upon arriving in Shandow, the group dynamics change a bit. It is apparent that there may be more to Black Opal than previously thought, and Cameo gets entangled with another vampire.
Cameo and the Highwayman is exciting and unexpected, and I love it! This series is one where the first book set up the world and the setting, the foundation of the series. With the foundation in place, the second book was able to delve deeper into the characters, plot twists and suspense.
Part of why I like this book so much is because the focus is narrowed down a bit in this installment. There are fewer main characters, and the story focused on Cameo, Opal, and Edel, the vampire who was also the thrall of Cameo’s master. There are other characters in the book, of course, but there really is more attention on the main characters. The attachment between Opal and Cameo grows, and is then tested when Opal is forced to face his past. The plot builds slowly to an unexpected, thrilling climax.
I so completely hooked on this book that I read the entire book in one sitting. When I finished the book, I kept trying to search through my kindle for the excerpt of the next book. At this point, I HAVE to know what happens next. Circumstances are completely changed for all the characters, and I can’t even imagine what’s next.
This series is now a must-read for me. Cameo and the Highwayman is a fascinating and amazing book, I highly recommend giving this series a try.
