Welcome to my stop of the  Illicit Magic Blog Tour!  You can read my review of Illicit Magic HERE.  Today, we have a awesome guest post and giveaway from Author Camilla Chafer.

Creating Magic:

Hands up – who would love to have a magical power? I know I would!

What I wanted to show in Illicit Magic was a very “real” kind of magic. I didn’t want it to be cartoonish with puffs of smoke or bubbling cauldrons and flying broomsticks. Instead I wanted to create a realism to the magic by describing fantastical acts in a way that would make the reader think “yeah, that could happen”. Of course I still wanted to have fun with it so there’s some cool dialogue between the characters when one dips into the mind of another, or when describing the kind of career you could have when you’re a magical being – “Are you saying I have a future career as a supernatural Fed Ex?” asks our heroine Stella, after using her mind to not only move a small object but, accidentally, a table too. (Oops.)

My witches are all imbued with magical traits; not all of them have the same powers but their magic does fall into two very clear distinctions. One is of an innate magic, where the character, such as the heroine Stella, can simply feel the magic and use it to do extraordinary things like teleport and move things with her mind. The second path is that of spell craft where the character does not have an innate magic but instead uses tools such as spells and potions to create magic. There is, of course, some cross over between the two, so the innate magic group could use spell craft, and those that are stronger with spell craft might have some limited innate magical abilities.

So why have two different types of magic? Something we see in Illicit Magic is the struggle of witches to support each other, unite and also protect themselves from the mysterious, and very dangerous, witch hunters, the Brotherhood – not to mention the fight for supremacy amongst themselves. Like in real life, just because you seem to belong to a certain group of people, it doesn’t mean you all get along and here the witches are no different. There’s infighting, heirarchies to deal with and the cross over between innate magic and spell craft to contend. Throw in the rising power of a novice witch and you’ve got a bubbling mix of magical intrigue.

So, tell me, what magical powers would you love to have?

Camilla Chafer Bio:

Hi, I’m Camilla and I’m the author of Illicit Magic and Unruly Magic, the first two books in the Stella Mayweather Paranormal Series. The series starts with a lonely young woman, Stella, who has been caught up in a terrifying witch hunt and is whisked thousands of miles away to what she thinks is safety to learn her craft. The series is a blend of magic, mystery and romance with a splash of humour – and while the girls really do go all out to save themselves, there’s always a hunky guy or two on hand to help them out.
I live in London, UK, but I try to travel as often as I can – lately I’ve been to Paris, all over Denmark, Luxembourg, and several US states. In my day job I’m a journalist and editor so I write for magazines, newspapers and websites throughout the world (my favourite assignment was spending a week riding rollercoasters – if you listen carefully you can probably still hear me screaming).
