Five minutes into Miss Eugenia Talbot’s presentation at court, notorious rogue Mr. William Grant made her laugh, ruining her debut. To hush up the scandal, Eugenia’s aunt hires a matchmaker to quickly find a suitor— anyone except the infamous William Grant—to help restore Eugenia’s reputation. But amiable Eugenia shows a disturbing tendency to follow her heart, and is again caught in the company of notorious Grant. When a traitor creeps closer, threatening to ruin more than just Eugenia’s reputation, her kindheartedness may be her ultimate undoing…

Book Savvy Babe’s Review:

From the beginning to the end of this book, I had a smile on my face.  A Wedding In Springtime is a delightful, fun, sweet, all-around fabulous read.  The story begins with Lady Eugenia’s debut to the Queen of England, and what a fantastic, memorable debut it was.  I was laughing out loud and fell in love with Genie right then because the girl held herself together much better than I would have in that situation.  After the embarrassing debut, Eugenie needs to find a husband quickly if she is to salvage her reputation.  Genie’s aunt, cousin, a dowager duchess, and a new friend work together to find Genie a match.  However, while the ladies are husband-hunting, their men are caught up in intrigue involving French spies, gambling debts, and trying to avoid the marriage traps.

I love the characters in A Wedding In Springtime, they are colorful, quick-witted, and amusing.  Genie Talbot and Penelope Rose are unconventional ladies, they speak their minds and they prove to be much smarter than society would give them credit for.  Mr. Grant is quite an entertaining character, he loves his fine, colorful clothes and living a life free from the marriage noose.  However, he is attracted to Genie in a way he had never been attracted to a woman before.  Genie challenges Grant to want more from life, to be more and care about more.  They make a wonderful pair, both of them are light-hearted, caring, and they love to laugh.

There are multiple perspectives and viewpoints throughout A Wedding In Springtime.  I got to know many of the characters, understand them, and they really pulled me deeper into the story.  I did not want to put this book down once I started reading it.  The first chapter had me hooked, and the continuing story held my attention, made me laugh, and intrigued me with the various plot threads of matchmaking, treachery, and romance.  Amanda Forester did an excellent job with this book, the plot is complex, there are many different threads and side stories, but they all come together for an exciting conclusion that left me very happy and very eager for more.

I definitely recommend A Wedding in Springtime to historical romance readers.  This book is a delightful read that you do not want to miss.  I am so excited that there are more books in this series to come, I can not wait to see what comes next for the characters.

Paranormal Romantica #Review- Dragon’s Lair: The Summoning by Seraphina Donavan

Dragon’s Lair: The Summoning

by Seraphina Donovan

Dragon's LairPublished by Cobblestone Press
Publish Date: December 14, 2012
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance
Series: Dragon Shifter’s #2
Heather’s Rating: 3stars
Blurb from Goodreads:

As dragon shifters, Remy and Philippe had spent their lives searching for their perfect mate, and in Lilly Montague, they found her. But enemies from their past are threatening their happiness. Dragon law dictates that they must meet the issued challenge and face their enemies in battle. But when Lilly sees them in Dragon form, will she be able to accept them?

Book Savvy Babe’s Review:

I was drawn to this book by the dragon shifters.  I love dragon shifters and am always curious to see how they are portrayed.  Add in some steamy scenes and I’m game.  Dragon’s Lair: The Summoning is the a short read (only about 50 pages), and the second book in the series.  I had not read the first installment of the series, so when I began reading The Summoning, I was a bit lost and taken aback.  The opening pages jump right into steamy scenes, and I was not quite ready for that.  As I continued reading, I picked up on the relationship dynamics between Lilly, Remy, and Philippe.  The three are a in a menage, committed relationship.  Lilly is the human mate to both Remy and Philippe, who are dragon shifters.  Remy and Philippe’s past catches up with the when old enemies kidnap Lilly.

The Summoning is a novella, so the story lines are not super developed.  I only briefly got to know the characters, but I liked them and their unique relationship.  The dragon shifter magic supernatural elements were interesting and made me more curious about them.  Even though it took me awhile to understand the romance and relationship between the three main characters, the sex scenes were pretty hot, and explicit. (To be clear; this is an erotic story is about a menage featuring 2 men and 1 woman.)  There was more to this story than sex, there is a kidnapping, fighting, and dragon magic.

I would have likely enjoyed this book more if I had read the first book and understood the characters better from the beginning.  Nevertheless, Dragon’s Lair: The Summoning was an enjoyable, steamy, quick read, and I still love dragon shifters.  I would recommend reading the books in order though.

Blurb from Goodreads:

There’s more than one way to be powerful . . .

It is during a routine school project that Abby Silva–sixteen and nearly friendless–makes a startling discovery: She is descended from women who were accused of witchcraft back in 1600s Salem. And when Abby visits nearby Salem, strange, inexplicable events start to unfold. Objects move when she wills them to. Candles burst into sudden flame. And an ancient spellbook somehow winds up in her possession.

Trying to harness her newfound power, Abby concocts a love potion to win over her longtime crush–and exact revenge upon his cruel, bullying girlfriend. But old magic is not to be trifled with. Soon, Abby is thrust headlong into a world of hexes, secrets, and danger. And then there’s Rem Anders, the beautiful, mysterious Salem boy who seems to know more about Abby than he first lets on.

A reckoning is coming, and Abby will have to make sense of her history–and her heart–before she can face the powerful truth.

The Book Pirate’s Review:

High school is tough for anyone, especially the hidden nobody with a tall lanky physique and frizzy wild hair. Add to that budding, unharnessed magical abilities and ancestors pushing those talents to the surface and you have a possible train wreck waiting to happen. Welcome to Abigail Silva’s life.

Mystery, magic, and the gorgeous guy next door? Sign me up! My heart raced every moment Rem was on a page. For once I wished to be the pining nobody just so I could lay eyes on what May Gold had in mind for this character.

As for the quality of writing, Maya has done a superb job keeping a quick pace, yet explaining everything a reader needs to keep up. The suspense was perfect, bringing you into the witchy world of Salem with all of the normal fears and excitement.

I would consider this a great weekend read for the young adult, and a fun novel for a middle schooler. There is nothing inappropriate, yet the slight romance is still hanging in the balance of the pages. Great lessons can be taken from the struggles Abby faces.

I actually hope for a sequel from Ms. Gold or a similar read in the future!

Hot Blooded

by Amanda Carlson

Hot BloodedPublished by Orbit
Publish Date: April 23, 2013
Genre: Urban fantasy, paranormal
Series: Jessica McClain book 2 (review of book 1, Full Blooded)
Source: E-Galley provided in exchange for honest review
Heather’s Rating: 4stars
Blurb from Goodreads:

It hasn’t been the best week for Jessica McClain.

Her mate has been kidnapped by a Goddess hell-bent on revenge — but Jessica is playing for keeps.

Because she’s the only female werewolf in town…it comes with its own set of rules…and powers.

Aided by two vamps, two loyal Pack members, and one very reluctant human, Jessica must rescue her man while coming to terms with what being a wolf really means.

All in a day’s work for a girl.

The second novel in the Jessica McClain series is a full on action adventure featuring one angry Goddess and plenty of monsters, demons, and a few newly risen beasties…

Book Savvy Babe’s Review:

Werewolves, vampires, witches, goddesses, and more collide in Hot Blooded, the adventurous and exciting sequel to Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson.  The paranormal world includes all sorts of supernatural creatures but is centered around Jessica McClain, the one and only female werewolf.  Hot Blooded picks up where Full Blooded ended, and the book is filled with action from start to finish.  Jessica is on a mission to rescue her mate from the clutches of a jealous goddess.  The quest is full of traps and life-threatening dangers.  Jessica’s new powers are tested and pushed, but she is determined to get her mate back, or die trying.

Hot Blooded is truly an action-packed book.  There are dangers and enemies at every turn and Jessica learns more about her powers and abilities with each new challenge. Her twin brother Tyler and her pack-mate Danny are helping her on the challenge, as are two vampire trackers and a human who doesn’t know when to let well enough alone.  I loved all the action and the challenges, but I felt that with each challenge, all the characters would sit around and chat about the magic, dangers, possibilities, and consequences a lot.  They spent quite a bit of time chatting, and at times the chatter felt repetitive and I wanted the characters to quite squabbling over everything and get to the rescuing.  Also, since the mission was to rescue Rourke, he wasn’t in this book as much as the first book, and I missed him.  Hot Blooded was more about Jessica learning more about her abilities and less about her developing relationship with Roarke.

Even though I missed some quality Rourke time, I really enjoyed this book.  I love the concept of Jessica being the only female werewolf and having immense, unknown powers.  She is obviously has a powerful destiny and I love how her story is unfolding.  From the minute she turned wolf in book 1, Jessica has been caught up in non-stop action.  The paranormal world that Amanda Carlson has created is complex and filled with all sorts of imaginative, unique paranormal beings, as well as the standard vampires, werewolves, and witches.  The more Jessica becomes involved in the paranormal world, the more intriguing the story becomes.

Urban fantasy and paranormal fans, I definitely recommend this series.  This series is best when the books are read in order.  If you pick up book 2 without reading book 1, the story bight be unclear or confusing in places.  Hot Blooded is an excellent installment in the Jessica McClain series and I already can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

The Eternity Cure

Early YA Paranormal Dystopian #Review: The Eternity Cure

The Eternity Cure

by Julie Kagawa

The Eternity CurePublished by: Harlequin Teen
Publish Date: April 30, 2013
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Dystopian
Series: Blood of Eden book #2. (Book 1, Immortal Rules, my review)
Source: E-Galley provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Heather’s Rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars 4stars
Blurb from Goodreads:

Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.

Book Savvy Babe’s Review:

Wow.  This sequel to the Immortal Rules is an excellent read.  When the story begins, Allie is on her own. She left her new friends safely tucked away in Eden and went in search of her sire, who was being tortured by a crazy, evil vampire.  Along the way, Allie meets up with Jackal, her blood brother and previous enemy.  The pair come to a tense truce to find their sire.  The search leads them to hidden laboratories, clues about the Red Lung virus and a possible cure, and a new destination, New Covington. Allie has to return to the city she was born in, face her past, save her sire, and try to stay alive.

The world in The Eternity Cure is a paranormal dystopian world full of monsters and desperation.  The setting drives the story, which has excellent plot development. There is so much to this story, so many twists and turns.  Allie was a fairly simple girl before she died and became a vampire, she was a survivor.  This survivor has turned into a fierce and loyal key player in a deadly world.  Allie is still young, she died at 17 and her young age shows through at times.  She is still a young woman, she has confusing feelings about a boy and her “family” pushes her buttons.  She may be vampire, but I understand her motivations and fears, and I really like her character.

I am very happy that Zeke was a prominent character again in this book.  Zeke is stubborn in his own way, he hangs on tightly to his own anger and emotions, but he is like Allie in that he is fiercely loyal.  Through all the hard, difficult, and gruesome moments, Zeke pulls through and is a huge support to Allie.  I even grew to like Jackal.  There seems to be a lot more to Jackal than what he shows on the surface and I am immensely curious to see how his character grows and changes through the series.

I loved the fast-paced nature of The Eternity Cure.  I have said that the plot development is excellent, and that plot keeps the story moving.  I was turning pages as fast as I possibly could to see what would happen next and try to guess what the outcome would be.  There are both successes and failures throughout the book.  There are thrilling moments, and gut-wrenching, devastating moments as well.  The Eternity Cure is tells a full story, but Julie Kagawa did her job and left me wanting more.  I have to know what happens next, there are huge questions left unanswered.  I am very much looking forward to reading the third installment of this series.

Paranormal and Dystopian fans would really enjoy this series.  The first two books have exceeded my expectations and I am fully impressed.  I have become very attached to the characters and absorbed in the world.  This series is technically YA, but the content is violent and very mature.  I absolutely recommend reading this series, but I do recommend reading the books in order.
