Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.  This meme is simple and fun, you just pick up your current read, flip to a random page, and choose 1 or 2 teaser sentences to share!  Here are the guidelines:

  • Grab Your Current Read
  • Open to a random page
  • Pick two “teaser” sentences from that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO SHARE SPOILERS! (make sure what you share doesn’t give too much away.  You don’t want to ruin the book for other readers)
  • INCLUDE the TITLE & AUTHOR too, so other TT participants can add the book to their TBR and wish-lists!  If possible, add the page number.

I started reading the ARC of The Ruins of Lace by Iris Anthony today.  This book is a historical fiction, set in 17th century France and is about how forbidden lace affects different people in completely different ways.  It is really interesting so far, and I am enjoying it.  My teaser comes from the beginning of the book, I chose it because it stood out for me.  Note* Since the teaser comes from the advanced release copy, it is subject to change.

But lace is formed from the absence of substance; it is imagined in the spaces between the threads.  Lace is a thing like hope.  It lived, it survived, and it was desired for what it was not.  If faith, as the nuns said, was the substance of things hoped for, then lace was the outline – the suggestion – of things not seen.

The Ruins of Lace releases October 1, 2012.  Here is the book blurb from Goodreads:

Lace is a thing like hope.
It is beauty; it is grace.
It was never meant to destroy so many lives .

The mad passion for forbidden lace has infiltrated France,
pulling soldier and courtier alike into its web. For those who want the best, Flemish lace is the only choice, an exquisite perfection of thread and air. For those who want something they don’t have, Flemish lace can buy almost anything––or anyone.

For Lisette, lace begins her downfall, and the only way to atone for her sins is to outwit the noble who now demands the impossible. To fail means certain destruction. But for Katharina, lace is her salvation. It is who she is; it is what she does. If she cannot make this stunning tempest of threads, a dreaded fate awaits.

The most lucrative contraband in Europe, with its intricate patterns and ephemeral hope, threatens to cost them everything. Lace may be the deliverance for which they all pray…or it may bring the ruin and imprisonment they all fear.

Happy Teaser Tuesday, I hope you are all having a great week!
